At the time of a divorce or relationship break down both parents are expected to continue to financially support their children from that relationship.
In most instances the legal obligation to financially support a child following separation is governed through the Australian Child Support Agency. Once contacted, they carry out a formal assessment of your case. The assessment sets the minimum amount that the non carer parent is required to pay.
Separating couples may also agree for the non carer parent to provide additional financial support including, for example towards payment of school fees, healthcare and sporting activities.
To estimate how much you will have to pay or that you will receive in child support you can use the CSA Online child support calculator here.
It is important to contact us to discuss arrangements as soon as possible. There are many aspects to take care of when separating and divorcing, including property settlement, child support, financial arrangements, living arrangements and custody.
